Naming Folders, Pages, and Files -

Understanding how naming conventions work when it comes to websites, folders and filenames you upload is really important. We are going to give you some simple information below which will help you get it right first time. Using these practices at first may seem different to what you are used to, but trust us, after a few times of doing it, it will become second nature.

ORGANISE YOUR FILES:

If you think about it, when you look through your files and folders on your PC or Smartphone, how often can you readily locate what you are looking for. Consider organising your folders and files - a bit like having a filing cabinet.

FOLDERS and DIRECTORIES:

A directory is basically your main folder. So as an example our main directory could be 123simples. Inside that directory we would then have folders -
theme-images
theme-css
theme-javascript.

RIGHT: theme-images
WRONG: Theme Images.

LOWER CASE LETTERS and NO SPACING:

USE lowercase and NO SPACING

Contain no spaces, punctuation, or symbols (use dashes for spaces). Use lowercase text to name files - so for example: my-favourite-image.jpg

First tip - get used to naming folders and files using just lowercase letters. Believe it or not it works very well, and for website URL's it is a must. So example you have folders on your computer that you intend to upload to your website directory. If you read the bit above you may have noticed we used all lowercase, with NO GAPS IN BETWEEN THE WORDS! If you leave gaps when you upload a file and/or folder then you might have problems when it comes to finding the pages, or finding the file you are looking for.

Use lowercase to name your file names with no GAPS or SPACES in between the file name. Also each file must be saved either as a JPEG, JPG, PNG, GIF, or PDF.

RIGHT: my-website-logo.jpg
WRONG: My Website Logo.

File Name EXTENSIONS:

90% of the time, files will save with the correct file extension - for example JPEG, JPG, DOC, DOCX, PDF.

If the file extension is not valid, then your uploaded file will not work as you hoped.

HOT-LINKING IS NOT PERMITTED

Hotlinking is known as the act of using another website's bandwidth by linking directly to their website's assets, such as images or videos. This is not permitted, and in fact most web hosts will not allow this to happen!
